23rd Annual United Way Sopinka Luncheon: A Legacy of Collective Action

The United Way remains dedicated to its core mission of helping those who need it most. By funding essential programs, the organization works to bridge the gap for individuals facing financial insecurity, mental illness, homelessness, addiction, and other hardships.

Locally, United Way funds 129 programs and serves approximately 200,000 people in the Halton and Hamilton regions. The frontline agencies supported by United Way are vital in providing assistance to those in need, offering protection against the devastating effects of poverty and social isolation.

This year, more than 272 legal professionals from Hamilton and Halton came together to support their community at the 23rd Annual Sopinka United Way Legal Luncheon. The event raised an impressive $375,000, which will directly benefit the programs and initiatives that help thousands of vulnerable individuals across the region.

The luncheon featured an inspiring keynote address from Justice Moreau of the Supreme Court of Canada, who has championed linguistic representation and litigated landmark cases involving the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The event also paid tribute to the lasting legacy of the late Justice John Sopinka. Throughout the evening, attendees heard powerful stories of hope and resilience from individuals directly impacted by United Way-funded programs, including a moving account from a local beneficiary that underscored the tangible difference these funds make in people’s lives.

“This event is a testament to the dedication and compassion that define our legal community,” said Rob Hooper, Sopinka Committee Chair. “Seeing both seasoned professionals and emerging legal leaders unite for this cause is truly inspiring.”
