Lawyer Referral FAQs

Hooper Law is here to help. We have designed this page to answer your questions and direct you to crucial resources. If you have a question and can’t find the answer on this page, please contact us.

How much is your referral fee and when will I receive it?2020-04-22T14:34:52-04:00

If you refer a client to us and no prior work has been done on their case, you will receive 15% for the first $50,000 of legal fees and 5% of all legal fees thereafter, to an absolute cap of $25,000, once the case is closed.

If you have already begun work on your client’s case, we will be happy to negotiate a suitable fee with you, as well as paying all third party disbursements up front.

If your client’s case is set to go to trial and you would like us to represent your client as trial counsel, we will need the file a minimum of six months before the trial date and we can work out a financial relationship.

Whatever your requirements, we would recommend you make the referral as early in the proceedings as possible to ensure the most satisfactory outcome for both you and your client.

If I refer my clients to you, will you do the same for me?2020-04-22T14:35:26-04:00

Yes. We have a reciprocal relationship with referring lawyers. If you refer your clients to us for personal injury services, we will refer clients to you for services you can provide.

If my clients need additional legal services, will you refer them back to me?2020-04-22T14:35:58-04:00

Yes. If you refer a client to us, we will not take additional work from them without your approval.

Can I continue to be involved in my client’s case?2020-04-22T14:36:27-04:00

We welcome your continued involvement in the case if your client desires it.

What does the Law Society of Ontario say about client referrals?2021-10-25T15:50:15-04:00

Regardless of when the referral was made, lawyers and paralegals should review Rule 3.6-6.1(2) of the Rules or Rule 5.01(16) of the Paralegal Rules, as applicable, and Section 19.1 of By-Law 9. These requirements apply to all referral fees payable or paid on or after April 28, 2017

Once you’ve contacted us we will arrange a time to review the circumstances with you and to meet with your client so we can advise the best way to proceed for your client’s unique circumstance.
