Sean Hayward recently joined Hooper Law to expand the firm’s medical negligence practice. He also assists with complex personal injury claims and cycling related injuries.

To learn more about Sean, we posed eight questions to him:

1) Why did you join Hooper Law?

Rob and I talked for years about the need to assist clients who were approaching Hooper Law with complex medical negligence claims. The timing was right for me to join the firm to help accomplish this.

2) What makes medical negligence law different?

We take nothing for granted when developing a medical negligence claim. At each step of the litigation process from intake to trial, we must anticipate the evidence required to succeed and find the best experts to review the file.

3) What have you learned since joining Hooper Law?

The firm is located in a beautiful 19^th century house. Beautiful 19^th century houses with single pane windows are very cold in the winter.

4) What is the most satisfying part of your work?

When I hear from former clients years after litigation about the care they afford after the successful resolution of their claim.

5) What is the most difficult part of your day?

I turn away many claims due to the economics of litigation which preclude most instances of medical negligence from reaching our courts. It is very difficult to tell a potential client that the firm cannot assist despite a very serious injury to them or a loved one.

6) What other work do you do at the firm?

As an avid cyclist I also assist with files arising from cycling injuries.

7) Have you been in a cycling collision?

I’ve never been struck by a vehicle; however, I once slid down the descent on Weirs Lane on my chest when my bicycle slid out in the rain. Fortunately, I was able to get back on my bicycle, ride home and snapped a photograph before the adrenaline dissipated:

8) Do you cycle in Hamilton?

Yes, I commute by bicycle at least once a week all year round. I’ve been pleasantly surprised that about 85% of my route to the office is on bicycle lanes.
